New wine prize for species protection
CARLO wine prizes awarded at ProWein
The newly initiated and internationally advertised CARLO Wine Award took place for the first time and met with a great response within the wine industry from the very first time it was held: almost 100 wines were entered and tasted by a renowned jury. The participation fees generated more than €7,000, all of which went towards species conservation projects.
Despite a rather short application period of 6 weeks, a total of almost 100 wines were entered in the categories of historical grape varieties, non-alcoholic wines, classic grape varieties and new grape varieties (PiWis). These were tasted by a renowned panel of experts made up of various personalities from the wine industry, such as Markus Del Monego (Sommelier World Champion 1998 and Master of Wine 2003), Kathy Féron (Jacques’ Wein-Depot), Christian Löw, Guido Walter, Kai Wagner (Slow Wine) and several members of the Sommelier Union.
The jury agreed that the CARLO Wine Award has the potential to develop into a major international wine prize within a few years. ‘The CARLO Wine Award is something very special with its approach of directly supporting species conservation projects with the proceeds generated. The award-winning wines stand for sustainability in the glass that you can taste,’ explained Markus Del Monego after the tasting. The high quality of the wines on show was also praised, enabling the jury to award a total of 30 prizes in various categories.
We are happy to take part in the CARLO Wine Award and
promote through our participation the attention
for holistically sustainable viticulture and species conservation.

Not just another wine prize,
but a direct contribution to species conservation
The focus of the new wine award is on honouring the sustainable production methods of the wineries and the associated taste quality of the wines submitted in equal measure. The CARLO Wine Award is not profit-orientated. With their employment, the wineries support Save Natura Initiative projects, as all proceeds are channelled directly into species conservation and thus endangered species in the vineyard regions are supported with targeted biodiversity measures. This approach was highly praised by the jury.
